What is an inspection fixture

An inspection fixture positions and holds a part in a defined position, to check whether it meets the dimensional specifications. It allows quick, repeatable inspection, directly in production or in the quality lab.

At INOVAMIND we develop the fixture design: we study the part and the inspection requirements and define the most suitable positioning, clamping and measuring solution.

When inspection fixtures make sense

Parts produced in series
Freeform plastic or sheet-metal parts
Inspection carried out by operators on the line
Repeatable checking across shifts and suppliers
Parts that meet the dimensions but fail at assembly

What inspection fixtures we develop

Inspection fixtures tailored to each part
Clamping and positioning devices
Supports, locating pins and clamps
Holders for dial gauges and measuring instruments
3D design of the whole assembly

Components

What an inspection fixture is made of

Base: the plate that acts as the reference for the whole assembly
Supports and stops: they touch the part at the points that define its position
Locating pins: they enter holes in the part and fix its position
Clamps: they hold the part the same way every time, so the result does not depend on who loads it
Profiles: they follow the shape of the part and show at a glance whether it is in place
Dial gauges or other instruments: they measure the dimension that matters

How we define positioning in inspection fixtures

The part must sit in a single, repeatable position. For this we use the references from the drawing (the datums): three support points define the main plane, two define the direction and one locks the rest. If the drawing does not define them, we propose the most logical ones and validate them with you.

Types

What type of inspection fixtures you need

TypeWhat it is for
Inspection fixtureChecks the position and shape of the part and shows deviations
Holding fixture for measurementHolds the part during CMM or 3D scanner measurement
Go / no-go gaugeVery fast check of a specific feature
Holder for dial gaugesMeasures a specific dimension directly on the part

Designed for the people who use it

A good fixture is simple to use: the operator understands where to place the part, the clamps always tighten the same way, measurement access is easy and the reading is clear. We also think about maintenance: wear of the supports, replacement of parts and reliability over time.

Process

How we work on inspection fixtures

01

Analysis

We study the part, the drawing and the inspection requirements. If there is no CAD model, we can 3D scan the part.

02

Design

We design the fixture in 3D: positioning, clamping and measurement access.

03

Review

We validate the design with you before moving on to manufacturing.

04

Delivery

We deliver the fixture design, ready to be manufactured.

Frequently asked questions

Inspection fixtures

What is an inspection fixture?

It is a device that positions and holds a part in a defined position to check whether it meets the dimensional specifications. It allows quick, repeatable inspection, directly in production or in the quality lab.

When is a fixture better than a measuring machine?

A fixture is suited to frequent, quick checks carried out by operators on the line. A measuring machine or a 3D scanner gives a more detailed analysis. They are often used together: the fixture for daily inspection and detailed measurement to validate and analyse deviations.

Do I need to have the CAD model of the part?

It helps, but it is not essential. If there is no CAD model, we can 3D scan the part to obtain the data the design needs.

Does INOVAMIND manufacture the fixtures?

We develop the fixture design. Manufacturing is not included; we discuss the best solution with you for each case.

How do I request a proposal?

Send us the drawing or photographs of the part and the inspection requirements, through the contact form, WhatsApp or by phone. We analyse the request and reply with a proposal.

What is the difference between a fixture and a go / no-go gauge?

The gauge checks a single feature (for example, a hole). The fixture holds the whole part and lets you check several features at the same time.

What information do I need to provide?

The drawing or CAD model of the part, the tolerances and features to inspect, the quantity to produce and the place of use (production or lab).

Can you design from the part, without a drawing?

Yes, we scan the part and create the base model for the design.
