3D metrology: the scientific study of physical measurement

In broader terms, 3D metrology is often referred to as the general field of precision measurement in industry. In its basic form, applying 3D metrology means acquiring the geometric data of an object very accurately along the 3 axes (x, y, z).

These measurements are often acquired using a coordinate measuring machine (CMM); however, any accurate 3D capture system can be used.

Examples

3D metrology work and applications

Colour deviation map on a laptop during dimensional analysis
Surface analysis with sections over the scanned mesh of a part
Metal tube with reference markers for 3D scanning

CMM or 3D scanner for 3D metrology: which to choose

Coordinate measuring machine (CMM)3D scanning
How it measuresTouches points on the part, one by oneCaptures millions of points without contact
Best forDimensions, holes, planes and precise geometric tolerancesFreeform shapes, curved surfaces, complete parts
ResultMeasured values for the defined featuresColour map with the deviations across the whole part
When to useControl of critical featuresOverall view, deformation analysis, parts without drawings

They are often combined: the scanner shows where the deviation is and the CMM confirms the critical dimensions.

Report

What the 3D metrology report contains

Identification: part, drawing or reference CAD model, date, equipment used
Alignment: how the part was positioned relative to the model
Deviation map: colour image showing the zones within and outside tolerance
Dimension table: nominal value, tolerance, measured value and deviation
GD&T: flatness, perpendicularity, position and other tolerances, when the drawing defines them
Conclusion and recommendations
Applications

What 3D metrology is for and what we need from you

First parts of a new production run and validation of tooling and moulds
Batch control and investigation of assembly problems
Analysis of warping, wear and deformation
Comparison between the real part and the CAD model

To measure, we need the drawing or CAD model with the tolerances, the list of dimensions or features to measure, the part (or batch) and what you want to know: conforming or non-conforming, or the cause of the deviation.

Process

How we do 3D metrology

01

Planning

We define the features to measure, the tolerances and the datum reference.

02

Measurement

We measure by CMM or by 3D scanning, depending on the part.

03

Analysis

We compare with the CAD model and analyse GD&T tolerances.

04

Report

We deliver a dimensional report with the deviations found.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you measure on site or do I have to bring the part?

We do both. For large or already installed parts, we measure at your premises.

What is GD&T?

It is the language of technical drawings for defining tolerances of form, orientation and position (for example, how far a surface may deviate from flat). It lets you control the function of the part, not just its dimensions.

What is the difference between scanning and measuring?

Scanning captures the complete shape; measuring compares that shape or specific dimensions with the drawing. Metrology uses both techniques.

How long does it take?

It depends on the number of parts and dimensions. We state the deadline in the proposal.

What report will I receive?

A PDF report with a deviation map and dimension table and, if you ask, the measurement data.

Can I use the report for my customer?

Yes, you can attach it to deliveries and audits. If your customer requires an accredited laboratory certificate, tell us before hiring.
