Reverse engineering
We obtain the data of an existing object to study, analyse, modify or reproduce it — even when there is no technical drawing. To learn more, see the Wikipedia article on reverse engineering.

This data can be obtained through 3D scanning, which gives us a polygonal model in STL, PLY or OBJ format, derived from the point cloud.
That model is then worked in parametric software to obtain the perfect 3D (CAD) model.

When reverse engineering makes sense
Reverse engineering work and applications

Three levels of reverse engineering results
Not every project needs the same level of modelling. We agree with you what makes sense, so you do not pay more than you need.
| Level | What it is | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Scanned mesh | The polygonal model of the part (STL, OBJ, PLY), cleaned and repaired | Visualisation, 3D printing, comparisons |
| Surface CAD | Smooth surfaces rebuilt over the mesh | Freeform parts, design, moulds |
| Parametric CAD | Model with editable operations and dimensions (extrusions, holes, radii) | Mechanical parts that will be modified or manufactured |

What we deliver
When reverse engineering really pays off
It pays off if the part is discontinued and the supplier no longer exists, or if the original drawing has been lost. It also helps when you need to adapt a component to another assembly, or to improve a part that always fails in the same place. Rebuilding the model from a scan is usually faster and more reliable than measuring the part by hand.
Intellectual property
Reverse engineering must respect patents and third-party rights. We work with parts that are yours or for which you have authorisation.
How we do reverse engineering
3D scanning
We capture the object's geometry accurately.
Point cloud and mesh
Next, we obtain a polygonal model in STL, PLY or OBJ.
Parametric modelling
Then we rebuild the part in CAD software, with design intent.
Final CAD model
Finally, we deliver an editable model, ready for production.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between scanning and reverse engineering?
Scanning captures the shape of the part (a mesh). Reverse engineering goes further: it rebuilds the part as an editable CAD model, with dimensions, holes and surfaces that can be changed.
Will the CAD model match the part?
It stays faithful to the scanned geometry, with the cleaning needed for manufacturing. You can compare the CAD with the scan and receive the deviation report.
Which formats do you deliver?
The format of the CAD software you use; STEP is the most universal. We also deliver STL, OBJ or PLY of the mesh.
Can you work on large or installed parts?
Yes. We scan on site and then work in the office.
How much does it cost and how long does it take?
It depends on the complexity of the part and the level of modelling. We send a proposal with price and deadline after seeing the part or the photographs.
Do I keep the part?
Yes. If we scan at our premises, the part goes back with you, and the files are yours.
